Our History

WilliamBooth.jpg The Salvation Army began in 1865 when William Booth, a minister in London, England gave up the comfort of his pulpit and decided to take his message into the streets where it would reach the poor, the homeless, the hungry and the destitute.

His original aim was to send converts to established churches of the day, but soon he realized that the poor did not feel comfortable or welcome in the pews of most of the churches and chapels of Victorian England. Regular churchgoers were appalled when these shabbily dressed, unwashed people came to join them in worship. TentMeeting.jpg

Booth decided to found a church especially for them — the East London Christian Mission. The mission grew slowly, but Booth's faith in God remained undiminished.

Today’s Salvation Army has diverse congregations, embracing people of all ages, cultures and demographics.  In over 106 nations around the world, we continue to work where the need is greatest, guided by faith in God and love for all people.

Our Beliefs

The Salvation Army is a Christian organization and part of the universal Christian Church.

Its message and the lifestyle it advocates are based on the Bible’s teaching. Its work is to make known the good news about Jesus Christ and to persuade people to become His followers. Everything The Salvation Army does is rooted in the faith of its members. The confidence Salvationists have in a loving and caring God finds outward expression in their love for humanity and their practical response to human need.

Sunday Services sanctuary.jpg

We worship on Sundays at 11:00 a.m.  Our services provide an opportunity for worship, celebration, prayer, reflection, and practical instruction from the Bible.  Music is a blend of traditional hymns and contemporary songs, accompanied by piano, brass band and rhythm ensemble.

Mission Statement (Canada)

The Salvation Army exists to share the love of Jesus Christ, meet human needs and be a transforming influence in the communities of our world.
